And you desperately need both in order to stave off the hordes of security
exploits...and I wouldn't be at all surprised if your machine was infected
anyway.

No OS is invulnerable, I'll agree. OTOH, Windows is inherently insecure *by
design*; making it secure would break the vast majority of existing
applications. AFAIK, there are no exploits for OS X in the wild that do not
require a cooperating user. The Unix security model makes life a lot harder
for a malware writer.
My roommate's parents are a case in point. We got so tired of trying to
debug their Windows system remotely that we bought them a Mac Mini for
Christmas a couple of years ago. We're all much, much happier, and their
computing experience is a lot more trouble-free.
