Ah ha!
I am interested in this, as I went to shooting almost all color neg a number
of years ago. As I have understood it, it is impossible to profile a scanner
to a color neg film.
The IT8 targets depend on using a special, highly controlled process of
shooting and processing a piece of film (or a whole lot of them), and then
measuring what is on that film. The information is then laced into a file
that you download off the manufacturer's website or is supplied with the
target. The computer that runs your scanner then compares the output with
the reference.
If you shoot a reflective target yourself, you lack the reference. I don't
suppose that any old densitomiter will do.
I don't remember the reason that it is presumed impossible to profile neg
films. I remain interested in Silverfast software, as they seem to have the
color neg thing best handled, but it's just too expensive.
