Well, after a long, mostly silent, and nearly photo-void time (new job, big
changes), I decided it was time to have some fun, and to buy myself a dslr
with my new, hard-earned money.
I was strongly set on an oly e-something, but as my budget is still a bit
tight, I was really looking for a e-3xx, 2nd hand if possible. But in the
course of my chase, I tried a very cheap pentax *ist Dl. And bought it on the
spot. Price was not the only consideration ; the thing was coming with a
full-frame lens (tamron 28-80, in case I would later add a mz film body) a
decent memory card, and more importantly, just felt 'right', as many pentax
do (in my opinion, pentax is the closer you can get to the olympus feeling
outside of olympus : same quest for small sizes, low weight bodies, no
nonsense ergonomics, no marketing hype, sharp lenses), although it has 'only'
6 Mpixels.
Now, I'm feeling quite disturbed. On one hand, I'm really happy by the first
tests I did (default settings are really catering to the unwashed masses, but
once parameters are tweaked just a bit, the camera becomes surprisingly 'pro'
in every departement). Colors are accurate, lens is sharp, AF is good
enough... Too bad, the weather is so poor I've really nothing to show here.
On the other hand... it's not an olympus. Oh, well, my OMs are still going
strong, and I've no intention to quit the film processing hobby until 'they'
pry that Tri-X from my cold, dead hands, so ... I'll get over it, I guess.
And I'm not out of the list yet.
Why not an olympus dslr, ultimately ? Sadly, I couldn't find a single one to
buy in my price range. Either they don't sell at all, or they are not yet on
the 2nd hand market. <sigh>
