When I was at school, we were taken out to measure stuff with chains
as one of those grim mathematical exercises.
They actually had surveyor's chains as in - "What can we do today?
I know! It's raining. Let's get them to lug heavy chains all over the
sports fields."
Later we used a theodolite to make a half-inch contour map of the
front lawns, also in the rain.
They seemed to believe in building character through a damn good
soaking.
