I also remember thinking, on my first trip to Japan, that the battery
cap slot was probably set for Japanese coins, though I don't remember
which coin I thought fit best. It could very well be the 500 yen coin,
as you suggest. The OM-2s was first made in 1984, and the 500 yen coin
was first made in 1982. It is still the largest Japanese coin, so it
makes sense that the slit would have been designed to just barely
accommodate the largest coin (thus making it suitable for most of the
smaller coins, as well).
Speaking of OM stuff in Japan, here's the only new OM-4ti I've ever
seen, at a small camera shop in Kobe:
