OK, it wasn't my intention to do a lot of promotional work here, just give a
heads-up as I'm delighted to have this thing in my camera. The seller has a
website under construction, but the yahoo group thing is where his listing
is now - I didn't realize you have to join or anything; I guess I'm
permanently logged in to Yahoo because of Flickr.
Anyway, in response to some of the questions:
- Yes, cross-split means a vertical and horizontal split; it's the original
Ec-L screen made for the 1 series of Cannons, which have the tab on the left
rather than the right, adapted for the 5D.
- It is perfectly usable at f/5.6, though one or two quadrants start to
darken. At f/8, it is less than optimal, but useable; if you adjust your
eyepoint a little, you can get two clear quadrants to focus with, either
vertical or horizontal. This is from having a quick look through a
stopped-down Zuiko 50/1.4 just now.
- All the AF-point lights work fine. Spot and partial metering are maybe
just less than a third of a stop out when pointed at a blank wall. Even
with the original screen, I don't identical meter readings doing this. I
shot about 150 frames yesterday, mostly matrix, a few spot - the matrix was
normal, needing a bit of + or - exposure compensation here and there, the
spot metered shots are bang on - I used it like I would for chromes, picking
a tone and placing it on the manual scale.
- The tab is a little smaller than on the Ec-A screen, making handling a
little fiddly. The screen has the spot and partial circles from the
1-series, and it can take a couple of tries to get the screen circles
aligned with the 5D circle.
- A shim is provided, along with little rubber finger sleeves, for want of
a better term, in case you need to handle the screen. Mine focusses spot on
without the shim. As an example, I've uploaded two shots to
www.photowiese.net - one with an AF lens wide open using the AF, one with
the Zuiko 100/2 wide open focussed with the screen. The AF has picked up
the frame of the subjects glasses rather than the iris, even though the
frame was slightly outside the AF-box. You can judge the accuracy of the
manual lens focussed on the iris for yourselves. Both were taken wide open
using matrix and aperture priority at 400 ISO.
Anyway, your mileage may vary and all of that - I like it, so there ;-)
