I accept your current comparison. My conclusion was when I was
shopping several years ago and compared a D100 and a 10D. After I
used my D100 for a while I picked another Canon, I forget the model,
and had a similar reaction. Very heavy and coarse ratchet on the
knurled wheel and a big clunk with the shutter/mirror return action.
I have not handled a current Canon. While I like the features of the
D200, I have to say I prefer the in hand feel of the D100.
These things are all subjective anyway, but not unimportant. That is
why I usually tell people who ask me for a recommendation to pick
their price point and go handle the cameras in that range and get the
one they like the best. There is not enough difference among them to
really worry about unless you have special needs.
