I never had the cold weather starting issues with mine, but I live in
California.
If you check the owners reports at fueleconomy.gov the RX-8 gets
about 17 mpg overall and a car with similar performance and arguably
more agile handling the Honda S2000 usually gets 24-25 mpg for its
owners. All that heat under the hood cooking the wiring and rubber,
and in the console baking whatever you put there and going out the
tail pipe is your money.
If rotaries were the norm someone inventing a piston engine would be
greeted as a genius and savior in this era of declining petroleum
production.
