If I understood you correctly, Scott, you have a ND4 filter permanently on
your 600/8 lens. That being the case it isn't surprising that you are
having difficulty focusing, especially on the half-size E-500 screen. I
don't think I would be able to focus that on an OM screen - in fact, I think
I might nit be able to frame the subject, let alone focus.
Suggestion #1 - take off the ND filter. Don't worry that you don't have a
plain glass to replace it, because I reckon the degradation that might
result will be much preferable to the out of focus results you are presently
"enjoying".
Suggestion #2 - if the above doesn't suit, or doesn't get the results
needed, get hold of a large searchlight as a focusing aid ;-)
