Over 35 years ago we stuck with chlorate and sugar, electrically
detonated under the surface of a pond. But we also had fun with
chemical weapons, well, smells - vanillaldehyde and mercaptan being
the favorites!
(You can detect a vanillaldehyde concentration as low as 2 parts per
quadrillion, but a bloodhound can detect vanillaldehyde if an ounce of
it is diffused in a sealed room containing 33 cubic miles of air.
Mercaptan is what they add to fuel gases to make them smell. Boy,
does it...)
