I can't validate it in that I don't have all of those things in hand but
I have heard this tale enough times that I believe it to be true.
Looking at the hot shoe pin layouts of a 5D and an E-1 you can also see
why it should be true. Yes, the Canon has one more pin. I do own a
Canon extension cable bought used on the bay at a decent price
(off-camera shoe cord 2) and can verify that it is robustly built.
