I'm guessing that film will continue to be produced outside the US longer than
it will be produced in the US. Unless/until most of the world becomes
heavily covered with both digital cameras and the services needed to support
them, I see film still being used some places in this world. Unless I shot
many many pictures I still can produce photos cheaper with my OM1 that I
could with even a relatively budget priced camera. If I have to have pictures
without any planning then a disposable camera does a passable job.
I don't know a lot of detail about the actual processes for manufacturing
film , but I don't see it as being that different from making any other sheet
goods with a chemical layer on it with the exception of it needing to be done
in the dark and cleanly. If a factory can make adhesive tape, I don't see why
it would be a leap in procedure to make photographic film as long as you had
the right chemicals.
