"The greater distance gives a better DOF too. " Not meaning to be a mini macro nit picker but a 90mm macro lens will give you more working distance than say a 50 mm but if you have the same magnification the DOF would not change at the same aperture. You would also have better background control due to the narrower FOV. The manner (?rate/"smoothness") in which the OOF areas change seem to vary with FL, though I've never seen that quantified or described. Perhaps the latter is another hallucination.
