I understood that it was because of some clever economic strategies
in WW2 (war bonds come to mind) that maximised the profits from war
production and left the US economy healthy while other like the UK
were crippled. Oil/coal would have been a factor but the speed of
readjustment was far faster than elsewhere, even in countries like
Britain which were energy resource rich (coal).
