Easy now. You may recall that Gollum refused to lead Frodo to Mordor 
with the Elven rope around his neck, gave his word to do so unfettered 
(at least physically) and did in fact lead Frodo - was the leader - to 
Mordor, in spite Sam's misgivings.

I believe Walt may be properly chastised for poor usage that can be 
easily misconstrued, but not for mistaken knowledge of the story.
