Thanks for commenting, guys.

I also thought the picture doesn't work, pretty much for the same reasons 
that Moose stated - the lit area in the center is out of focus, while the 
area that is in focus (relatively) is in shade and there also isn't 
anything particularly contrasty in that area that would say 'subject'.
