Ken Burns' doco made the point that murkins invented baseball so they
wouldn't have to play cricket. In those days, games lieterally went
until they finished - up to nine days sometimes.
It also allowed them to avoid real international contests and to
enjoy a game where ungentlemanly behaviour like spitting, disputing
decisions, all-in brawls and roughing up umpires was the norm rather
than the career-ending exception.
Ho hum.
