Just a bit more info about Mount Athos - it isn't a "small Greek Island",
but is the most easterly peninsular (the other two peninsulars are Kassandra
and Sithonia) of the Halkidiki region (which in itself is a peninsular, with
Greece's second largest city , Thessaloniki, situated on the west coast of
the isthmus) The Mount Athos peninsular is about 25kms long by maybe 6kms
wide and is all pretty mountainous, the highest peak (Athos) is 2033 metres
high. There are no major roads, although there are some unsurfaced mountain
tracks, but the monasteries along the coastline are supplied by ships.
