This reminds me of an incident I had a couple of weeks after I got the E-1.
About 2 years ago I think.
I was on the northern side of the estuary that we overlook from our house,
walking around the deserted edge that borders on cattle farmland and then
onto the levees of the sewage plant oxidation ponds. Close to an industrial
area. It was low tide so there was plenty of beach to walk on, and there were
thousands of ducks and Canada geese on the Estuary - must have been
May in the shooting season and they come there for refuge. As I walked on
well past the last other human I noticed three large dogs in a pack
pretending to hunt. These three dogs clearly knew each other well and I
know dogs love to run as a pack. They were about the size of a retriever, and
were mixed breed; sheep-dog/alsatian?/brindle mastiff. One was well out in
the shallow water making a wasted attempt to get the waterfowl - which just
swam away, and the others just mooching around.
Then they all spotted me. Immediately I became the quarry and they began
to position themselves around me at more or less equal distances.
I had just the camera, no tripod or other potential weapon. I knew that the
only way out of this was to attack and to assume a position of dominance. I
also had a fair idea that they would have owners who would command them
by voice, and a guess of the words they would use.
So I (can't remember) either pretended to pick up rocks or a large stick (they
would be familiar with both), advanced on the most menacing and in a loud
voice told him several times to "go home" ( a common command for that
kind of dog and especially in a low-grade suburb), and made as if to hit/throw.
There was a moment's hesitation, and the selected dog backed off, found
something to urinate on just to show he still had some pride and leadership,
they re-grouped and made off at a fast run, heading down the boundary of the
farmland to the suburb / industrial area they came from. They could also
have been night guard dogs, that got loose..
I have no doubt that if I had run away, walked away, or been a smaller person
(child), I could have been history in short order.
A close shave. Thank goodness I had some practice and insight into large
dogs.
I phoned the City Animal Control group when I got home and for the next few
days I saw them around the area, but I have no idea if they caught them.
