Apparently the R-1 is discontinued without a replacement. Dead end
there. You could buy her a new Nikon D40 including kit lens for as
little as $$550 which is in the price vicinity of what you are
talking about. It is small, light and has gotten rave reviews and
will far exceed the capabilities of a bridge camera for image quality
and for learning purposes.
There is also something to be said for impressing a novice with a
camera that is not from a company with a marginal attachment to
photography instead of electronics, film or medical equipment. It
shows a little respect for the seriousness of her purpose.
