It just occurred to me how similar the Zeiss lens thing was to the
Leica M8 thing. With Leica the infrared sensitivity was blamed on a
thin IR sensor filter compromise needed to keep the image sharp with
a belated request to accept a coupon for a free IR filter for two
lenses. With Zeiss it was a situation of lenses that looked bad until
stopped down and Zeiss replying that the aberration was a feature.
What is common is that both companies apparently issued flawed
products for sale and provided rationalizations for them after the
fact when they had been discovered by early users. Their explanations
may have valid bases but coming after the fact is damaging. I don't
think either company is technologically inept, but my first reaction
was to wonder why they had not introduced the items with these
"features" up front to avoid that suspicion. Then I remembered that,
at least for Leica in the past, this was the sort of explanation that
would have come out in an issue of Leica Fotografie or incorporated
in a year or two into an article in one of the several books like the
Leica Way or Leica Manual. They have not changed, but perhaps the
times have.
