Sorry Chris,
I should have mentioned that *both* the noise and flare only show up if
you use photoshop and increase the levels quite considerably. Which I
did because I wanted to compare the two scanners. If memory serves me
correctly it was somthing like +7.0 for the gamma for both scanners
after I had made profiles using incamera with a HCT velvia slide. The
gamma is way way beyond that I normally use. In practice the noise of
the 5400mk1 was not a problem and the flare was barely detectable in
normal use. The flare looked like a double image displaced to the bottom
and right as if it was a secondary reflection from the back of a mirror
or somthing like that. rather than equal in every direction
