May be heresy, but I think the original (1984 - "then") pic is
'better' than the recent (2002 - "now") one. There's an electricity
to the first one that simply isn't in the follow-up shot which seems
more like a simple record image. Perhaps the difference between a
chance encounter with a stranger vs. a Big Deal attended by a *lot* of
strangers.
Of course I'm looking at a digitized version on a monitor but the '84
shot looks technically superior as well. The lighting is more subtle
and gives her face more dimension whereas the '02 one seems flat and
clinical by comparison.
In any case, it brings attention to the plight of the people of Afghanistan.
