The flash isn't very smart. It just take a smart operator to fool the
flash into doing what you want. But if you're doing fill flash you'll
do much better to actually measure the flash output with a meter such as
the Sekonic L-358 and choose the flash power that equates to 20-30%
contribution from the flash relative to total light from both ambient
and flash combined. Come to think of it, Dr. Flash always recommends
measurement and manual controls over automation of any type when dealing
with flash regardless of usage for fill or the main light.
