I'm not quite sure where this could lead, but it's an idea: my 
Canyon PowerShot A40 was one of a series of Canyon P&S digitals that 
had a waterproof housing available. Perhaps such a housing and a 
cheap digital camera (my A40 was $250 three years ago) might do the 
trick?
