I think I'd go with the FireWire too since it has a *good chance* of
performing better than the USB. But I don't think you can be sure of
anything without comparative testing since you have no idea how the
interfaces of your computer and external drive are actually implemented.
I don't have any FireWire ports on my wheezy old machine but I do have
to be careful about selecting a USB port. I have both 1.1 and 2.0 ports
available and if I accidentally choose a 1.1 port for an external backup
drive I'll be a much older man by the time the backup completes.
But it's easy to check which is which if you have a card reader for
digital images. My SanDisk reader with a SanDisk Ultra II in it runs
about 8-9MB/sec when downloading images via a USB 2.0 port. I don't
know how long it takes with the USB 1.1 port because I fell asleep with
the stop watch in my hand while waiting for it to complete. :-)
