<Ever tried to find a new battery for a 5 year old laptop ? Of course improved
batteries for younger computers / cell phones get better and better, last
longer etc. But the form factor is always different from the old ones, the
output power is different, you see what I mean.>
But few of us I suspect would like to go back to a totally battery
less camera for all purposes. Even my first flash (using magnesium
bulbs) had to be discarded for regular use when the battery which
fitted it went off the market - I still have the last battery used as
it has not yet split after many years and corroded away. Will even
the SR44 remain for decades?
I certainly do not think that the transition to digital is a
marketing plot. Following the loss of my wife's ten year old high
end 'canyon' film point-and-shoot in hand luggage to an airport
thief three months ago, I have recently been looking at the present
market place in some detail. It is noticeably changing very fast
with middle bracket film P&Ss disappearing rapidly. Thus, the
insurer's specialists advised what they wished to supply as a 'like
for like/equivalent' replacement, and then found that they could not
source it! They gave up and sent money instead which suited us as
we could make our own choice. In fact we expect delivery shortly of
another film 'canyon' point and shoot with very similar
characteristics to the original - although that was a second choice
as the preferred model could not be sourced by our local photographic
specialist - 'film cameras to order only, no local stocks held'.
Why did we not go digital when we were given the chance? My wife
was not anxious to learn the new routines to process and store
digital images and I would have had to upgrade her computer somewhat
and add Photoshop or similar, in addition to buying an extra storage
card. My OM2SP will continue to be used for close ups of geological
specimens or when a 24/2.8 is needed for wide angle views, while a
T32 and ring flash are available as required, with an OM 10 as
back-up. Meanwhile I will carry on following the discussions about
the E (and other) DSLRs in the hope of making a sensible decision
when I need(!) one.
Perhaps you will guess that I am a previously undeclared listmember
who has reached my three score and ten (in 2005), so you
statisticians can add another to the 70+ group.
