Thank you for that very useful insight AG. I like the reference to
different films...it is like being able to achieve electronically what
can be done with different camera backs on an MF camera only much more.
This is an area I will concentrate on as it is a very powerful feature.
I can understand absolutely why you would demand this feature in
professional use.

I don't know about a "MATRIX" as everybody has certain
preferences in how they setup a camera. For example, mine
usually lives in Aperture-Priority and the front dial controls
the aperture while the rear dial controls exposure compensation.
My autofocus is set as AF+MF and the metering is ESP. Everybody
else will have some other variation on the above theme.
But where the Custom Settings make my life so much easier is by
allowing me to reconfigure the camera with one twist of a dial.
Furthermore, the biggest problem with digital cameras is getting
back to your "base-line" settings. It is too easy to make a
dreadful mistake by overlooking some simple setting. Generally,
my Custom Settings look something like this (without the
camera-operation specifics):
1. ISO 100, WB 5300-1, RAW, Aperture F8. This is my standard
high-quality configuration.
2. ISO 400, WB 5300-1, RAW, -2 exposure-compensation, Aperture
F4.5. This is my standard flash configuration.
3. ISO 800, AWB-1, RAW, Aperture F4.5. This is my non-flash
ambient-light configuration.
4. ISO 1600, WB Custom1, Aperture F4.5, HQ, Sequence-Drive.
This is my action, theatre, night-sports, etc., configuration.
As you can see, my settings are pretty much similar to choices
in film. During a wedding, I'm almost in #2 or #3. Going from
flash to ambient light just requires me to change to #3 and turn
off the flash. Going back to flash just requires me to dial in
#2 and turn on the flash. Easy as that. If I decide to
severely alter some settingsn (which I do, like ISO, F-stop or
storage mode), I can quickly return to my baseline by just
recalling the custom setting.
The custom settings are what really makes the E-1 a killer
camera in professional event and wedding photography. I
absolutely will not buy a camera that doesn't have this type of
recall capability. This is far more important to me than
image-stabilization or faster auto-focus.
