Hi, yall. I'm re-posting this message from the Yahoo Canyon 20D list
from someone who had been using a Nikon scanner. The Nikon software
only generates TIFF or NEF (Nikon raw). When viewed in Adobe Bridge
preview the TIFF files caused a poor quality, low res image to appear.
He tried converting the NEF to DNG but the scanner apparently uses a
different brand of NEF than NEF used in Nikon cameras. The DNG
converter didn't know what to do with the scanner's NEF files. He also
tried converting the TIFF to DNG to get some other more useful format
but couldn't get that to work either... until he figured out how to get
Lightroom to do a TIFF to DNG conversion. But, it's still software.
Now Apple stuff (Mac OS?) doesn't recognize the DNG files. Aaarrghh!
I'm going to go back and tell him to try ViewScan.

Chuck:
I wanted to update you and everyone else as to the status of my problem
as others may have already experienced similar problems or may
experience them in the future.
Adobe DNG converter will not convert TIFF files to DNG. It appears to
only work for RAW images.
However, I found a way to convert the TIFF files to DNG by using Adobe's
Lightroom. I imported the TIFF files into Lightroom's library selecting
the DNG option in the import dialog window and then exported the files
again as DNG. Once I brought these DNG images into Bridge, they display
with a high quality resolution preview without any problems.
The only problem I am now experiencing is the fact that Apple's Preview
is no longer able to open these DNG files and gives me an error message.
This is not a major problem and I can live with it. Maybe the problem is
the way DNG files are saved by Lightroom. Since Lightroom is a new
application still in beta version and Preview is an OS based viewing
application, I have to assume that Apple still hasn't been able to
incorporate its format into its latest OS version.
I did convert the files to PSD from TIFF using Photoshop but experienced
the same problems with Bridge - the previews in slideshow view displayed
with very low resolution. I also tried converting PSD files to DNG but
Photoshop doesn't offer that option.
As I've told you before I have looked at the Nikon D200 and really liked
this camera. But working with Nikon has been everything but easy and I
am now reconsidering my decision to purchase this camera. One of their
technical support agents told me on the phone that being the large
company it is, Nikon has no obligation to make its products compatible
with Photoshop but rather Adobe is the one that should feel obligated to
conform to Nikon's standards. How is this for an attitude ???
Thank you again for all your help and suggestions.
