One thing that can be misleading is the statement "L series lenses offer
higher optical quality than their non-L equivalents,". This is not
always true. L lenses are about two things. One is optical quality. The
other is sealing against the elements and rugged construction that will
hold up under heavy and often rough use. In some cases, it seems that
midrange zooms are optically as good as or better than the nearest L
equivalent.
