There are alternatives, Christos, but the choice is up to whoever is sending
you the parcel. Sometimes, that means you don't get the choice. Depending
on the local delivery agent, the service for the same carrier can vary from
fast and good to slow and appaling. Always it means that what the choices
are depends on where the parcel is coming from.
Conclusion - you have to know how bad all the others are in your area before
you conclude that Parcelforce is worst of all!
To UK from US, USPS uses Parcelforce for all small packets, letters and its
GEM service, but FedEx for its GXM.
To UK from Germany, Deutsche Post used DHL for all packets - but not the DHL
courier service, a slower parcel delivery service which you might remember
as Securicor-Omega.
To UK from almost anywhere, the DHL/FedEx/UPS courier services are more
customer friendly, more expensive, and (if you are in a remote area)
dependent on independent local delivery agents whose responsiveness can vary
widely. But in my expeience with the couriers, their big advantage is that
they do not require payment of the duty and clearance fee upfront - they
bill you later.
