Absolutely!
A film scanner is a digital camera. It is photographing a scene
just like a digital camera is used to photograph a scene. The
only difference is that the scene happens to be flat and kinda
small. This scene is also slightly altered in it's color
accuracy.
Once the scan is complete, the image is treated in your workflow
just like a digital camera image. The problem will be to match
up the images from the two sources as close as possible. You
will not be able to do that very well unless you have some means
of calibration. You can't calibrate unless you have a reference
to calibrate to. I've used a gray-card and color patch chart
for years.
One common mistake people make, though, is to try and get the
film image to match the digital camera image. It's highly
unlikely that you'll succeed because the reponse curves of film
are not nearly as linear as they are with a digital camera.
Personally, I'd rather choose the film with the characteristics
I like and then try to match the digital camera images to it.
Unless you are a commercial photographer photographing fabrics
and cereal boxes, accuracy to the original scene is usually
subjective.
This reminds me of a prank that we played on a new print-lab
technician. We altered the skin color with theatre face paints
to some nasty cyan tint. Did the portrait session and turned
the roll in for development and printing. She couldn't get the
skintones to turn out right without everything else going nasty.
Previously, the owner had pulled the same type of prank on
another technician, but had spray painted the grass purple in
the outdoor portrait.
And you think the Leica M8 has problems! :)
