John, thanks. The A640PX is a 1.5v mercury replacement battery (available
from, amongst other places, www.photobattery.com). It may well be that it's
a bit off the original Mercury battery specs but with C-41 or b&w film there
is enough latitude to not notice.
The ECR I bought had some 'stuff' on the battery contacts as well but a few
quick sweeps with vinegar (my favorite solution for reviving battery
contacts) and it worked like a charm.
