When you open the door, the camera lights up like a casino with
warning messages and stuff.
These days, I hardly ever open it up anymore. I upgraded the
E-1 to a 4GB Microdrive and it just stays put. When I download
to the PC I do so through the E-1's USB port. (really do need
to get the firewire adaptor that'll fit my laptop). The A1 is
so blasted quick at file-writing that it's essentially a
non-issue there. A full burst of RAW images (six) will purge in
about 12 seconds.
As to the sleep mode, I have my cameras usually set to a pretty
short sleep duration (1-2 minutes) and am constantly "priming"
the shutter-release when I think I might need to take a picture.
The E-1 does fully shut itself off after a while which requires
a toggling of the On/Off switch. The A1 does the same.
