I have to disagree here. I prefer PS to RSE for the way I work. If I had
bunches of similarly lit images from studio or event work, I might well
prefer RSE.
And Tim, didn't you say you have PSCS2 recently installed? It includes a
RAW converter. People refer to it as ACRS, but you never see that
acronym in PS itself. In PS, click on the button about 2/3 of the way to
the right on the tool bar. I think it's supposed to look like a
magnifying glass looking at a file folder, but doesn't look like much of
anything. Last button before the tabs for Brushes, etc.
That opens Adobe Bridge, an image browser. It will show the image files
in any directory, including ORFs, with a thumbnail and the shot info.
Double click on any one (or more) and it will open in the RAW conversion
window. There, you can adjust exposure, brightness, color temp,
sharpening, lens corrections, curves, etc. etc. and either save the
result or pass it on into PS.
You can set it to show highlight and or shadow clipping, making
exposure, brightness and shadow adjustment a snap. I usually only do
those adjustments in the RAW converter window, then pass it on into PS
for further adjustments. Other folks will have different preferred work
flows.

I don't know about ORFs, but on Canyon RAW files, I think Adobe PS
(ACRS) does a better job with getting that very last bit out of
highlight detail that's almost lost. Otherwise, I can't see that one is
better than another from results, although the process is different and
any given person may prefer the interface of one or the other. If my
editor weren't PSCS2, I would certainly be using RSE, as I did before
upgrading PS, or Lightroom.
