Thanks for the second opinion. This, along with Chuck's description of his
lens, seems to confirm that mine simply has a mechanical problem.
It is cosmetically in mint condition, no obvious signs of abuse, but of
course that does not exclude the possibility of impact damage, incorrect
assembly by a repairman or something along those lines.
I probably won't attempt a DIY repair, might be tempted to get a
replacement though :)
