I can buy one of these for an attractive price, but can't recall much
about its optical quality. It's a pretty big honker for sure. Of
course it has an OM mount!
The other candidate is the Tamron SP 28-80 F3.5-4.2 CF MACRO which has
the advantage of being a two-touch and NOT varifocal.

Scott,
I can't speak on the Vivitar, but if you're looking at a Tamron, the SP
35-80/2.8-3.8 is generally regarded as being optically better than the 28-80.
That won't help you much if you need the 28mm focal length, though. Another
top
contender in this range is the Tokina AT-X 28-85/3.5-4.5, maybe the best in
terms of the combination of focal length, size, and optical quality. The
Tokina replaced the Tamron 35-80 as my midrange "walking around" lens a while
back. A good reference on most of these lenses is the Cult Classics web site,
if
you don't know about it: _http://medfmt.8k.com/third/cult.html_
