Oooooh IDEA!
Moose, your wall of pictures concept got me thinking.
First I though a grid of something slotted so you could slide in pictures
mounted to a common size. Since this would restrict you to a single size it
may not be the best (plus I couldn't think of a way to make the grid
easily). Then I remembered how the Victorians used to do walls of pictures.
In Victorian era houses in the UK at least its common to find a picture rail
in most rooms. Mounted behind a wooden trim near the top of the wall is a
metal rail that you put hooks on from which cords or chains hang down to
ultimately hang the pictures from. It is quite common to find them still in
use in older houses in the UK. Anyway perhaps you could modify this concept
(even make it free standing frame maybe)? How about using small S hooks to
join several pictures linked together? Add sets of stick on hangers on the
back at the top and bottom and you wouldn't have to drill holes in the
matting.
Enjoy!

I keep thinking of some sort of grid on the wall that various sizes of
matted/foam mounted images could be hung on. Haven't worked out any
details, though...
