Ian,
It hasn't changed around here. I have not experienced a fire but
we semi-regularly evacuate for hurricanes and have a well thought out
plan for what to take. They fit under two categories: the truly
irreplaceable and important documents. At the top of the list are the
photo albums and my slide file (now also includes the 150 Gig backup
hard drive); a folder that includes insurance policies, agent contact
information, bank account numbers and photos of house and contents. Last
comes the jewelry; none particularly valuable but of great sentimental
value. It all goes into two large Rubbermaid containers. So far they all
have had a home in which to return.

If you don't work from home, then maybe it's possible to leave one drive
at work, I actually installed an extra disk in one of my machines at
work and backup my personal stuff to it - photos and email, but then I
am allowed to do stuff like that. I use a small portable drive and it
just takes a couple of minutes .
If not then maybe a pal or somewhere else you visit often would fill the
hole especially if you have a reciprocal agreement.
Firesafe's are another option and not too expensive if you just get a
small one, a pain yes but not too much, It used to be that the first
things people grab in a fire are not money and jewels, but family
photos, not sure if that's the same now though ;-)
