Yeah, Adam, I was going to "bit of a dickhead", but with the
same addendum. Ever seen his movie? It's hard not to like a
bloke who tries to temper enthusiasm (and ironically just
highlights it) by taking the piss out of himself. Never liked
him much when I first saw his shows, but interviews painted
a bigger, more genuine picture of the reality of his
enthusiasm and outlook.
Steve's Australia Zoo is pretty damn good - I've been three times,
and taken quite a few photos (I've a great tiger shot - full
flight leap out of the water - but it needs a few hours PS
work on it to eliminate a large glass-reflection). You can
sometimes find him there too, either doing a croc-show or just
walking around (if not him, then his family). It's not flash (well,
okay the croc stadium is a bit ;-) ), but it's just really
approachable. The enthusiasm of the staff there is obviously
genuine.
I recall him once saying that what he was trying to do, since
he wasn't happy with the amount of land the government was
protecting, was that he was buying-up as much of it as he could
with the money he had so that he could protect it. Definitely
more a do-er than talker (and that's saying something in his
case!).
What Scott said affected me most though - "The news stories all
say "He died doing what he loved." Yeah, but I got the sense he
also loved his family even more. ".
Cheers,
Marc (who wishes he could be a bit more of a dickhead)
