Looks like color speckled film grain only not randomly distributed like
film grain and thus more bothersome. It happens at high ISO's, longer
exposures and is worst in dark areas. Take a photo to include some
relatively dark areas. Shoot this at both minimum and maximum ISO. Use
a tripod if needed on long exposure. Then blow up images on screen and
compare side-by-side. Then you'll understand what noise is. It's
called noise because, at some point pixels just get stuck in the on
state and their value has nothing to do with the surrounding color or
brightness levels.
Do the same thing with a C*n*n 5D at the same ISO levels and you'll
understand why some of us have jumped ship.
