Sure, that's what was available. Of course motor drives with high frame
rates go back to at least the late '60s, while IS is much newer. You can
get a MD and 250 frame back for the OMs, 5 fps for almost a minute, if
you want. And you forgot AF, before AF, one needed additional focusing
skills.
The farther back you go, the more important the ability to anticipate
just where and when the great shot would occur was. There was one guy
back a half a century or more who took great shots of boxing with an
8x10 view camera.
