This thing happened to me once before.... several years ago, I was
looking for a Bird Model 43 wattmeter (those of you who are hams know
exactly what that is... for those of you not so inclined, think of it as
a Gossen LunaPro for transmitter output...).
I had been watching, knew what they were going for, and when I finally
had the money together, started hunting. Every freakin' one of them I
bid on, I was outbid by THE SAME GUY who was, for some reason, hoarding
Birds. And he always went $20 - $40 higher than they had been selling
at for at least a month.
Finally, I caught the SOB off-guard at 3AM on one auction - he didn't
even bid - and the one I got was in mint condition and included the
exact power/frequency element that I wanted, which would have cost me
another $50 to buy. I did the Happy Dance of Joy the following morning
when Stealthbid dutifully reported back that we had snuck one past the
bastard...
