Actually, the reader wasn't "free" initially but when the product didn't
sell, Lexar ran "free with the purchase of" promotions to move the
inventory. I suspect it didn't sell for the reasons cited above;
incompatibility with all but specific Lexar CF cards. If they were all you
owned, you were in good shape. If you owned those and others, you'd need
two reading devices for CF cards -- a bit cumbersome.
