Here is more:
"For what it's worth, here's the 'unofficial' take on photokina in
september.
sources from within have mentioned to me the following:
1. the e-series will be tiered to three notably referred to as E-x,
E-xx and E-xxx
2. olympus already has at least one new E-x model available but for
some reason, they seem more likely to call it the E-3, which
obviously begs
the question, "what happened to the E-2". this brings some
interesting
possibilities. one could be that the so-called E-3 is a direct
replacement
to the E-1 and then the E-2 will start off the second or companion
pro model
in what could ultimately be a two-model pro lineup
3. the current e-500 is the exact iteration of the E-xxx group and
will lead a new stem of growth for olympus. this is a very critical
area for
olympus because this is where the bridge between the 'real' DSLR and
the
digital compact P+S. with the expected demise of the SP-series
(310/320/350/500), this group will shoulder the responsibilities. a
new
model in this group already exists but it remains to be seen if
olympus will
launch this one in september yet but it will be even simpler than
the
current E-500
4. the E-xx group will act pretty much as a 'go-between' but more
importantly has supporting role to play with the E-x pro group. many
serious
users could look here for the spare bodies. olympus already knows
what to do
here but is extremely tight-lipped about it
5. the E-x group will have no less than 10mpix - probably more
likely
to be 11-13mpix to begin with - even in a sensor this small. they
will
compete far more directly with canon and nikon's full-frame DSLRs
than ever
before
6. more new budget lenses are definitely coming out to support the
market created by the new E-xxx tier. they will definitely be slower
but
they will also be lighter and very affordable. this market will
split open
and olympus has a good chance to lead
7. i understand that Olympus has THREE new E-series DSLRs - mixture
of
E-x, E-xx and E-xxx - models waiting in the wings but there is no
confirmation whether (a) they will release all three, (b) mix
releases with
announcements or (c) merely bring one out and hold back the other
two. there
is no confirmation here.
my source used an interesting term here to describe Olympus' fight back
-
RENAISSANCE."
Exciting!!
