Tim,
As others have so convincingly pointed out the benefits of raw, I won't go
into all the details so well covered (thanks Moose). I was berating MYSELF when
I used the term "idiot". (ie..I could have had a V-8! SSR content ) When I
first got a digital camera, a S*ny F8ythree, I thought I'd save room by
shooting at lower resolution on its floppy based storage medium. I captured a
shot of my kids at a local arts fair that has become dear to my heart. I beat
myself up for years over shooting at such low resolution. The "digital
negative" contained in a raw image can be drawn upon in the future if an image
needs a little more work.
The majority (well just about all) of my images will never see the light of
day or be printed larger than 8x10, but I think back on that one picture.
Shooting raw is still very new to me. I played with it once and felt too
intimidated to switch. The 13MB file size also gives me pause. The picture
session with my sons' girlfriend should have been shot raw, however. Many in
the series of pictures were in less than ideal lighting conditions and I may
have had a bit more leeway in adjusting them ( or sent them to Moose :).
As with everything else, gaining experience with a particular workflow and
technology will help me grow. My current PC is lacking horsepower which is
another barrier to raw editing. Hopefully, I can upgrade soon. Now if I can
find a good deal on a terabyte drive with a easy backup system, life will be
good.
I'm currently toying with the Olympus software which came with my camera
and RSE. I remain dazed and confused! Where is that OM-4T? :)
Thanks, everyone for the comments. I always enjoy constructive criticism,
but did not mean to belittle anyone shooting JPEG. They are fine for most work
but raw may have given me an edge on this series. I just have to take the
plunge and find the money for the hardware and the intellect to embrace the
digital workflow :)

  Bob
