That's exactly my problem too. The grip strap puts pressure
across the back of my hand on ends up aggravating things more. 
The absolute worse has to be the grips and straps on Sony
camcorders. The one on my IS-3 wasn't bad, but the lugs gave
out. The strap for the A1 really toasted things.

I tend to keep the camera over the shoulder or on a monopod when
using it for extended periods of time. The monopod is definitely
the way to go if I'm also using the stroboframe.
