Walt wondered,
My confusion comes from reading Brian's comment that he had to stop
down to f/8 with his 500mm Zuiko. I've had my 500 for over 20 years, and I
still haven't been able to find the aperture ring and the thing's stuck on f/8.
Maybe Brian's got the Wyoming factory version or a lens I don't know about.
;-]
My fault, Walt. I should have put a ;-)) after it.
Intended to be an insider joke. Must have been too dry for the season.
Good idea to try a UV filter. I will check to see it I have one on my Zuiko 300
and test it. There's less "haze" (if that's what it is) early in the chilly
morning
though. There is a period of settled cool clear weather forecast for us for a
couple of days more as a big High sits over us. A welcome change from the
Antarctic Blasts of the last couple of weeks.
I've also realised that the construction of the E-1 is not conducive to taking
good photos of this nature, as (is this correct?) the exposure sensors are in
a straight horizontal line through the middle of the image. If that happens to
coincide with white snow, then the exposure is shoved all out of whack.
I did test this late this morning with the DZ 14-45 by pointing slightly lower,
and the image seemed to bear out this contention. However, overall the set
was too awful to post anywhere. I also tried setting the exposure by pointing
at a darker area and half depressing the button, then re-composing. Easy
with a DZ lens, but I suspect would be fraught with difficulty with the 500. It
had the desired effect to some extent with the DZ lens, but I didn't like the
image. Seemed to be unfocussed, for a start.
