This is especially useful if you have played any of the Sony cd's with
the XCP copy-prevention virus on them. However, my experience is that
once you have that particular gem infecting your machine, the only way
to truly get rid of it is to wipe and reinstall. Sony's "removal tool"
actually leaves another piece behind that still messes with your system,
and since it cloaks it's files as hidden system files, you usually can't
find and remove them without some serious geekin'. And even then, there
are no guarantees.
Trying to remove it the normal way usually leaves your cd-rom drive
useless, since it replaces the Windows system cd drivers with
bastardized XCP versions, and if you accidentally remove one of those
the wrong way, Windows will no longer have the ability to recognize a
cd-rom drive. Nice touch. Sony took a HUGE PR slamming over this, and
a class-action suit ended up forcing them to recall thousands upon
thousands of infected cd's and destroy them, re-pressing without the XCP
crap on them. As a result, people now trust Sony about as much as they
trust Microsoft.
