I finally got Olympus Studio to install on the new super Dell. I think the
problem was XP Service Pack 2, which was already installed. After downloading
41 updates (80+ MB), Studio 1.2 went right in off the CD and the 1.5 update
downloaded and installed without a hitch, just like it had three months ago on
my laptop, which didn't have Service Pack 2. On this computer, it f***in'
flies! And so do Photoshop and PWP 3.5. I've ordered the PWP 4 CD and will
wait till it arrives to try it out. And I'm seriously thinking about Bibble.
Looks good. I may download it later today and take it for a test drive.
But now to my real point. Photos look exactly the same on this computer, after
nearly no tweaking of settings, in either Photoshop, Studio, or PWP. I just
opened up a TIFF, saved from an E-1 RAW file, in all three, and I can't tell
any difference among them at all. I've either benefited from the blind hog
theory and done something right, or I'm just living right this week.
I'm absolutely astounded by how fast stuff works on this machine: 3.2GZ dual
core Pentium D, 2GB ram, and dual 250GB hard drives. Using "advanced
sharpening" in PWP on my laptop for a 30MB TIFF usually takes about 20-30
seconds. On the new computer, it's instant, barely a blink of the eye.
Despite the previous rant, things are going much better now. :-]
